# Outreach to Disabilities Communities

*Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study*

### Opportunity:

Enhance Radcliffe and Harvard’s diversity and inclusion employment commitments to individuals with disabilities (IWD), specifically individuals with visual impairments. These efforts also advance Harvard’s good faith outreach efforts as required under the expansion of Affirmative Action Plans.

### Project Leader/Team:

Nisha Mongia, Executive Dean; Chuck Curti, Director of Human Resources

### Collaborative Elements:

We initiated relationships with the Perkins School for the Blind, the Carroll Center for the Blind, National Braille Press, Spaulding Rehabilitation Network, and the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind to host and co-sponsor what has become an annual Job Fair for the Visually Impaired. Within the University, we linked with Harvard Human Resources Central Recruiting and the Harvard University Disability Services office.

### Outcome:

Over 70 job-ready, visually impaired individuals attended a job fair at Radcliffe where they met with recruiters from Harvard and 30 local employers. The objectives of the job fair were: 1) to provide a venue where IWD could explore employment opportunities 2) where Harvard, and other employers, could meet with IWD and present themselves as an employer of choice; and 3) to educate recruiters about IWD’s abilities, skills, and suitability for employment. Several people who attended the job fair received employment offers, including an individual who is now employed at Harvard.

### Future Plans:

- Continue to work with visually impaired organizations throughout the year to create IWD talent pipelines for Radcliffe and Harvard.
- Continue to host and co-sponsor the annual Job Fair for Individuals with Visual Impairments.
- Continue to encourage all Harvard divisions to conduct informational interviews with job ready IWD to foster employment possibilities.
